Dental Emergencies: What to Do and When to Get Help

Dental emergencies have a habit of arriving at the worst possible moment. A tooth knocked out at weekend sport, a filling that falls out mid-meal, or a sudden severe toothache that keeps you up all night. In these situations, knowing what to do in the first few minutes can make a real difference, and sometimes it can even save a tooth.

At Sherwood Smiles, we help families across Sherwood, Brisbane handle dental emergencies calmly and get the care they need quickly. Here’s a friendly, practical guide to the most common dental emergencies, what to do at home, and when it’s time to pick up the phone.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Not every dental problem is an emergency, but some genuinely need prompt attention. In general, a dental emergency is any situation involving significant pain, bleeding, trauma to the teeth or mouth, or swelling, especially swelling that is spreading or affecting your ability to breathe or swallow.

A useful rule of thumb is this: if you’re in severe pain, if a tooth has been knocked out or badly broken, or if there’s swelling and fever that suggests infection, don’t wait and see. Call your dentist for advice as soon as you can. Acting quickly often means simpler treatment and a better outcome. On the other hand, a minor chip with no pain, or mild sensitivity, can usually wait for a regular appointment, though it’s still worth having checked.

If you ever experience severe swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing, or trauma involving significant bleeding or a possible broken jaw, treat it as a medical emergency and call 000 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department.

A Knocked-Out Tooth

A completely knocked-out adult tooth is one of the true dental emergencies where fast action really matters. A tooth has the best chance of being saved if it’s put back in place quickly, ideally within an hour, so time is important.

If an adult tooth is knocked out, pick it up by the crown, which is the white part you normally see, and avoid touching the root. If it’s dirty, rinse it very gently with milk or saline, but don’t scrub it or use soap, and don’t wrap it in tissue. If you can, place the tooth back into its socket and hold it gently in place by biting on a clean cloth. If that isn’t possible, keep the tooth moist by placing it in a container of milk, or hold it inside the cheek if the person is old enough not to swallow it. Then call us straight away.

One important note for parents: if the knocked-out tooth is a baby tooth, do not try to put it back in, as this can damage the developing adult tooth underneath. Instead, keep your child calm, manage any bleeding with a clean cloth, and give us a call for advice.

A Broken, Chipped or Cracked Tooth

Teeth can break or chip from a knock, a fall, or biting something hard. The right response depends on how serious it is. For a minor chip with no pain, you can usually wait for a regular appointment, but it’s still worth having it smoothed and checked so it doesn’t become a problem later.

For a larger break, especially one that’s painful or has left a sharp or jagged edge, contact us promptly. In the meantime, rinse your mouth gently with warm water, use a cold compress against your cheek to reduce any swelling, and take over-the-counter pain relief if needed, following the packet instructions. If you can find the broken piece of tooth, keep it and bring it with you. Chewing on the other side of your mouth and avoiding very hot or cold foods can help keep you comfortable until you’re seen.

Severe Toothache

A severe or persistent toothache is one of the most common reasons people seek emergency dental care, and it should never be ignored. Intense tooth pain often points to decay that has reached the nerve, or an infection that needs treatment.

While you wait to be seen, you can rinse with warm salt water, gently floss to remove any trapped food that might be adding to the pain, use a cold compress, and take suitable over-the-counter pain relief. Avoid placing aspirin or other tablets directly against the gum, as this can irritate the tissue. If the pain is severe, if it’s accompanied by swelling or fever, or if it’s stopping you sleeping or eating, call us so we can help you get comfortable and treat the cause.

Dental Abscess and Facial Swelling

A dental abscess is a collection of pus caused by a bacterial infection, and it’s a serious dental emergency. Signs include a throbbing, persistent ache, swelling of the gum or face, a bad taste in the mouth, and sometimes fever. An abscess won’t clear up on its own and needs prompt professional care.

If you notice swelling that is spreading, or you develop a fever alongside dental pain, contact us without delay. And as mentioned earlier, if swelling begins to affect your breathing or swallowing, treat it as a medical emergency and seek urgent help immediately. Infections in the mouth can occasionally spread and become serious, so this is one situation where it’s always better to act early.

Lost Filling or Crown

Losing a filling or crown isn’t usually as urgent as a knocked-out tooth, but it can leave the tooth sensitive and vulnerable, so it’s best not to leave it too long. Keep the area clean, avoid chewing on that side, and steer clear of very hot, cold or sweet foods that might trigger sensitivity.

If a crown has come off and you still have it, keep it safe and bring it with you, as it can sometimes be re-cemented. Avoid using any household glue to stick it back yourself. Give us a call and we’ll arrange a time to restore the tooth properly and comfortably.

Bitten Lip, Tongue or Cheek

Injuries to the soft tissues of the mouth, such as a bitten lip, tongue or cheek, can bleed a surprising amount, which can be alarming even when the injury is minor. Clean the area gently, then apply pressure with a clean cloth or gauze to control the bleeding. A cold compress on the outside of the mouth can help reduce swelling and discomfort.

If the bleeding is heavy and doesn’t slow after around ten to fifteen minutes of steady pressure, or if the cut is deep or large, seek medical attention promptly. For minor injuries, keeping the area clean and eating soft foods for a day or two is usually enough while it heals.

How to Be Ready for a Dental Emergency

A little preparation makes emergencies far less stressful. Keep your dentist’s phone number somewhere easy to find, such as saved in your phone, so you’re not scrambling to locate it when something happens. A small dental first-aid kit at home can be handy too, with items like gauze, a small container for a knocked-out tooth, and pain relief suitable for your family.

Prevention plays a big part as well. Regular six-monthly check-ups help us catch small problems, like early decay or a cracked filling, before they turn into painful emergencies. Wearing a mouthguard for contact sport protects against knocked-out and broken teeth, and avoiding habits like chewing ice or opening packaging with your teeth helps prevent unexpected breaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a knocked-out tooth be saved? Often yes, if you act quickly. Keep the tooth moist, ideally back in the socket or in milk, avoid touching the root, and get to a dentist as soon as possible. The first hour is the most important.

Should I go to the hospital or the dentist for a dental emergency? For most dental emergencies, your dentist is the right first call. However, if you have severe swelling affecting your breathing or swallowing, heavy uncontrolled bleeding, or a suspected broken jaw, treat it as a medical emergency and call 000 or go to your nearest hospital.

Is a lost filling an emergency? It’s not usually urgent, but the exposed tooth can become sensitive or damaged, so it’s best to be seen fairly soon. Keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side in the meantime.

How can I avoid dental emergencies? Regular check-ups, a mouthguard for sport, and avoiding hard objects like ice all help. Many emergencies start as small problems that could have been caught early at a routine visit.

David, Galo and Sarai gave hands down the best dental care I have ever experienced! So much so I have my family now seeing them also. David is so thorough, explains everything so you have a full understanding of what’s happening with your teeth and only wants the very best for you. Also considering cost which was very important for me. The treatment from each of them was beyond kind and courteous. Equipment used is of high quality. I was so incredibly thankful for having them take care of me. Could not recommend them enough!

Excellent emergency dental care!
We have lived all over Australia and honestly have never come across such friendly and caring dental clinic as this one! They fit us in at the last minute on a late Saturday afternoon (5pm) to see my 10yr old son for an emergency care. Dr David and his team made my son feel at ease then took such good care and explained everything to us in great details and we were so grateful to have found this place! If you are after a dental clinic that puts patient care and take pride in the service they provide, you will not find a better clinic then this one! I highly recommend this place!

We had such an amazing experience with Sherwood Smiles. Our 2 year old had a fall and injured his tooth late on a Saturday afternoon (4PM!), we rang Sherwood Smiles and they were able to see him straight away as a new patient. Both on the phone and when we were at the clinic, Dr Rachel and Sarai were incredibly kind, patient, and understanding.

It was his very first dental visit, and they made it such a positive, gentle experience for him. They took their time, explained everything, and made sure he felt safe and comfortable. He even got to choose a little toy at the end. I’m so grateful for their quick response and the wonderful care they gave him. Thank you Sherwood Smiles!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Outstanding Emergency Dental Care!

I had a dental emergency today (Saturday) and was worried I'd have to wait until Monday. Thankfully, this dental clinic was able to see me on short notice, and I couldn't be more grateful for the exceptional care I received.

From the moment I called, the staff was incredibly accommodating and understanding of my situation. They worked me into their Saturday schedule without making me feel like an inconvenience.

The dentist was absolutely fantastic - truly knowledgeable, thorough, and took the time to explain exactly what was happening and what my treatment options were. They made me feel completely at ease during what could have been a stressful situation.

As a wheelchair user, I was also impressed by how accessible and inclusive this practice is. The office is fully wheelchair accessible, and the entire team was incredibly neuro-affirming throughout my visit.

The entire experience has convinced me to make this my new dental home. It's rare to find a practice that combines such clinical excellence with outstanding patient service and genuine commitment to accessibility, especially during weekend emergency hours.

If you're looking for a dentist who will take excellent care of you, even in urgent situations, I can't recommend this practice highly enough.

Thanks Dr Rachel and the team. I felt very welcomed and looked after well in the clinic. I was seen by Dr David and had a wonderful experience. 大卫医生也会说中文,我一些英文不会,他可以用中文解释👍

I had two fillings done years ago that kept giving me ‘funny & sore’ feelings. After consulting with Dr David, he took an X-ray for me and showed me that one filling had a ‘bubble’ and the other one started wearing off with some internal decay. However, rather than asking me to replace both fillings straight away, Dr David recommended to keep the ‘bubble’ filling for now and observe it as it’s currently working and does not give any troubles while replacing it will cause some potential disruptive damage to the original tooth. I am really appreciative of his genuineness and professionalism. He answered my questions very thoroughly and patiently which I did not experience before. When I asked a dentist if I should get the filling done or not, their answer was like yes if you want; or you can also wait till next time. I was never given explanation on how clinically significant those procedures were But here at sherwood smiles, I got those answers. Will go back again 👍

I highly recommend Sherwood smiles, I’ve had Dr Anna and Dr David work on my teeth and I can’t speak highly enough of them! They are exceptional at what they do and they really go the extra mile to explain everything and help you with a short and long term plan with your teeth and also show you the proper techniques of brushing and flossing. I left knowing what I had to do to maintain my teeth and what the future for my teeth would look like and this really gave me peace of mind.
