Your Child’s First Dental Visit: What to Expect

Your child’s first trip to the dentist is a big little milestone. Handled gently, it sets the tone for a lifetime of healthy habits and a relaxed relationship with dental care. Many parents feel unsure about when to go, what will happen, and how to keep their little one calm, and that’s completely normal. The good news is that a first visit is usually short, friendly and low-key, and a bit of preparation goes a long way.

At Sherwood Smiles, we love welcoming young patients and their families from across Sherwood, Brisbane. Here’s a warm, thorough guide to your child’s first dental visit, including when to book, what to expect on the day, and how to help the experience feel positive and even fun.

When Should My Child First See a Dentist?

It often surprises parents to learn just how early that first visit should happen. The general guidance is that children should see a dentist when their first tooth appears, or by around their first birthday, whichever comes first. That may feel early, especially when there are only one or two little teeth to look at, but there are good reasons for it.

An early first visit lets us check that your child’s teeth and gums are developing as they should, offer advice on cleaning and diet, and answer any questions you have as a parent. Just as importantly, it helps your child get used to the sights, sounds and feel of the dental practice while there’s nothing to fix. Starting early makes future visits feel familiar rather than daunting, and it helps us catch any small concerns before they grow.

If your child is older than one and hasn’t been yet, please don’t worry. The best time to start is simply as soon as you can. Whatever their age, we’ll meet them where they are and make the experience a gentle one.

Preparing for the Visit at Home

A little preparation before the day can make a real difference to how relaxed your child feels. The key is to keep things positive and low-pressure.

Talk about the visit in simple, cheerful terms. Let your child know you’re going to see a friendly dentist who will count their teeth and help keep their smile healthy. Try to avoid words that might introduce fear, even reassuring ones like “it won’t hurt,” because they can plant an idea that wasn’t there before. Keeping your own language calm and upbeat helps your child take their cue from you.

Reading picture books about visiting the dentist, or playing a pretend “dentist” game at home where you gently count each other’s teeth, can help your child know what to expect. Choosing an appointment time when your child is usually well rested and fed, rather than tired or hungry, also sets everyone up for a smoother visit. And if you feel a little nervous yourself, that’s okay. Children are wonderfully perceptive, so simply focusing on staying relaxed is one of the most helpful things you can do.

What Happens at the First Appointment

First visits are deliberately gentle and unhurried. The aim is to build trust and make your child feel comfortable, not to rush through a long list of procedures.

To begin with, we’ll usually spend a little time simply saying hello and letting your child settle in. For very young children, the examination itself might happen while they sit on your lap, which helps them feel safe. We’ll gently look at their teeth and gums, check that everything is developing well, and look for any early signs of decay or concerns. Depending on your child’s age and comfort, we may give their teeth a gentle clean and, where appropriate, talk about whether any further care is helpful.

Just as much of the visit is about you. We’ll offer practical advice on brushing your child’s teeth, on healthy eating and drinks, on habits like thumb-sucking or dummy use, and on what to expect as more teeth come through. It’s a chance to ask any questions you have, from teething to tooth grinding, in a relaxed setting. By the end, our hope is that both you and your child leave feeling confident and cared for.

Helping Your Child Feel at Ease

Every child is different. Some are curious and happy to hop straight into the chair, while others feel shy or unsure, and both reactions are perfectly normal. Our whole approach is built around patience and gentleness, and we never rush a child who needs a little more time.

We use simple, friendly language, explain things in a way that makes sense to a young mind, and let your child explore at their own pace. Small touches like a warm welcome, plenty of praise, and a bit of fun help turn the visit into a positive experience. You know your child best, so we always welcome your guidance on what helps them feel comfortable. Working together, we can help your child see the dentist as a friendly, familiar place rather than something to worry about.

Building Healthy Habits Early

One of the biggest benefits of starting dental visits young is the habits they help build. When check-ups are a normal, regular part of life from the beginning, children grow up viewing dental care as something ordinary and positive rather than stressful.

At home, you can support those habits every day. Begin cleaning your child’s teeth as soon as the first one appears, using a soft brush and an age-appropriate amount of toothpaste. Help them brush twice a day, and make it a fun, shared routine rather than a chore. Keep sugary snacks and drinks to a minimum, offer water rather than juice or cordial where you can, and avoid putting your child to bed with a bottle of anything other than water. These simple choices protect those precious first teeth, which matter more than many people realise. Baby teeth hold space for adult teeth and play an important role in eating and speech, so caring for them well really counts.

Why Baby Teeth Matter

It’s a common belief that baby teeth aren’t very important because they eventually fall out. In reality, they do a lot of quiet, important work. They help your child chew and eat comfortably, they support clear speech as your child learns to talk, and they hold the right amount of space for the adult teeth developing underneath. When a baby tooth is lost too early to decay, it can affect how the adult teeth come through later on.

Looking after baby teeth also protects your child from the discomfort of toothache and infection, and it reinforces the healthy habits that will carry through to their adult teeth. Caring for that first set of teeth is one of the best investments you can make in your child’s long-term dental health.

A Few Practical Tips for the Day

A little organisation on the day can help everything run smoothly. Try to arrive a few minutes early so your child has time to settle in rather than being rushed straight into the chair. Bringing a favourite toy, comforter or blanket can give a younger child something reassuring to hold, and it can help them feel at home in a new place.

If your child takes any medications or has any health conditions, let us know when you arrive, as it all helps us care for them well. It’s also worth thinking about how you’ll talk about the visit afterwards. Plenty of praise for being brave, regardless of how the appointment went, reinforces the idea that the dentist is a positive place. Some families like to plan a small, non-sugary treat or a fun activity afterwards to round the day off on a happy note. These little touches cost nothing but can make a real difference to how your child feels about their next visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early is too early for a first dental visit? It’s rarely too early. The general guidance is to visit when the first tooth appears or by around age one. Starting young helps your child feel comfortable and lets us keep an eye on their development.

Will my child need any treatment at the first visit? Usually not. First visits are mostly about a gentle look, some helpful advice, and helping your child feel at ease. Any care we do recommend is explained clearly and never rushed.

What if my child is scared or won’t cooperate? That’s completely normal, and we’re very used to it. We move at your child’s pace, keep things gentle and friendly, and focus on making the visit a positive one. Sometimes it takes a couple of visits to build confidence, and that’s absolutely fine.

How often should my child see the dentist after that? For most children, a check-up every six months works well. We’ll let you know if your child would benefit from being seen more often.

David, Galo and Sarai gave hands down the best dental care I have ever experienced! So much so I have my family now seeing them also. David is so thorough, explains everything so you have a full understanding of what’s happening with your teeth and only wants the very best for you. Also considering cost which was very important for me. The treatment from each of them was beyond kind and courteous. Equipment used is of high quality. I was so incredibly thankful for having them take care of me. Could not recommend them enough!

Excellent emergency dental care!
We have lived all over Australia and honestly have never come across such friendly and caring dental clinic as this one! They fit us in at the last minute on a late Saturday afternoon (5pm) to see my 10yr old son for an emergency care. Dr David and his team made my son feel at ease then took such good care and explained everything to us in great details and we were so grateful to have found this place! If you are after a dental clinic that puts patient care and take pride in the service they provide, you will not find a better clinic then this one! I highly recommend this place!

We had such an amazing experience with Sherwood Smiles. Our 2 year old had a fall and injured his tooth late on a Saturday afternoon (4PM!), we rang Sherwood Smiles and they were able to see him straight away as a new patient. Both on the phone and when we were at the clinic, Dr Rachel and Sarai were incredibly kind, patient, and understanding.

It was his very first dental visit, and they made it such a positive, gentle experience for him. They took their time, explained everything, and made sure he felt safe and comfortable. He even got to choose a little toy at the end. I’m so grateful for their quick response and the wonderful care they gave him. Thank you Sherwood Smiles!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Outstanding Emergency Dental Care!

I had a dental emergency today (Saturday) and was worried I'd have to wait until Monday. Thankfully, this dental clinic was able to see me on short notice, and I couldn't be more grateful for the exceptional care I received.

From the moment I called, the staff was incredibly accommodating and understanding of my situation. They worked me into their Saturday schedule without making me feel like an inconvenience.

The dentist was absolutely fantastic - truly knowledgeable, thorough, and took the time to explain exactly what was happening and what my treatment options were. They made me feel completely at ease during what could have been a stressful situation.

As a wheelchair user, I was also impressed by how accessible and inclusive this practice is. The office is fully wheelchair accessible, and the entire team was incredibly neuro-affirming throughout my visit.

The entire experience has convinced me to make this my new dental home. It's rare to find a practice that combines such clinical excellence with outstanding patient service and genuine commitment to accessibility, especially during weekend emergency hours.

If you're looking for a dentist who will take excellent care of you, even in urgent situations, I can't recommend this practice highly enough.

Thanks Dr Rachel and the team. I felt very welcomed and looked after well in the clinic. I was seen by Dr David and had a wonderful experience. 大卫医生也会说中文,我一些英文不会,他可以用中文解释👍

I had two fillings done years ago that kept giving me ‘funny & sore’ feelings. After consulting with Dr David, he took an X-ray for me and showed me that one filling had a ‘bubble’ and the other one started wearing off with some internal decay. However, rather than asking me to replace both fillings straight away, Dr David recommended to keep the ‘bubble’ filling for now and observe it as it’s currently working and does not give any troubles while replacing it will cause some potential disruptive damage to the original tooth. I am really appreciative of his genuineness and professionalism. He answered my questions very thoroughly and patiently which I did not experience before. When I asked a dentist if I should get the filling done or not, their answer was like yes if you want; or you can also wait till next time. I was never given explanation on how clinically significant those procedures were But here at sherwood smiles, I got those answers. Will go back again 👍

I highly recommend Sherwood smiles, I’ve had Dr Anna and Dr David work on my teeth and I can’t speak highly enough of them! They are exceptional at what they do and they really go the extra mile to explain everything and help you with a short and long term plan with your teeth and also show you the proper techniques of brushing and flossing. I left knowing what I had to do to maintain my teeth and what the future for my teeth would look like and this really gave me peace of mind.
